Direct support Professional

A Direct Support Professional (DSP) is a trained caregiver who provides support to individuals with developmental disabilities. The role of a DSP is to assist individuals with daily living tasks, such as bathing, dressing, and eating, and to help them achieve greater independence and community involvement. In addition to providing personal care, a DSP may also support individuals with developmental disabilities in other areas, such as socialization, communication, and education. They may provide transportation to community events, assist with grocery shopping, and help individuals participate in recreational activities. The ultimate goal of a DSP is to help individuals with developmental disabilities to live fulfilling and meaningful lives in their communities. This includes promoting their safety, health, and well-being, and ensuring that they have access to the resources and support they need to achieve their goals.

Qualifications:

  • Maybe responsible of transportation of the individuals they support.
Shifts

Day Shifts / Afternoon Shifts / Evening Shifts / Weekday and/or Weekend Shifts

Qualifications

These are some of the qualifications and skills required for a Direct Support Professional (DSP) position:

  • Certification: Certification as a Disability Support Worker (DSW), Personal Support Worker (PSW), Social Services Worker (SSW), Social Worker (SW), Child and Youth Worker (CYW) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the field of social services is required, with prior experience working with individuals with high medical and behavioral needs.
  • First Aid and CPR: A valid Standard First Aid CPR/AED Level C certificate is required.
  • Ability to work with complex needs: Ability to work with individuals with developmental disabilities with complex mental health issues and responsive behaviors.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team including health care practitioners, such as behavior therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and nutritionists.
  • Organizational skills: Excellent organizational skills, ability to take initiative, plan ahead, find creative solutions to individual needs, and manage caseload.
  • Communication skills: Excellent listening and communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as problem-solving and interpersonal skills. Overall, a DSP should have a passion for helping people, a compassionate and patient nature, and the ability to adapt to the unique needs of each individual they support.
